The décor is an interesting mix of traditional club themes and classical French architecture, making you feel that you really are in a backstreet cabaret club from decades ago. During DJ nights there is plenty of space to dance, and during performance nights the tables are brought closer to the stage for better views.

The true attraction of The Box in New York are the shows. Known for toeing the line between risqué and just plain obscene, The Box loves to push the limits, staying just within the boundaries of what is classy, miles away from what is conventional, delivering shows that will blow your mind, but probably offend more sensitive guests.

Expect cabaret and pole dancing, sure. But the real treats are the naked dancers, drag acts, and occasionally even vulgar shows, displaying sexual acts, people using their bodies as musical instruments, and general fun, sensual performers. Never a dull moment!

Not all the shows at The Box club are over the top, or even sexual, though. They also welcome a wide variety of alternative performers and indie artists, from ballet dancers to punk rock musicians. Simon Hammerstein, the owner, has aimed to keep the performances varied from the very start, looking for performers that are not only high quality, but also different from anything else New York has to offer.

One thing all the shows have in common is the volume. Expect loud, loud, loud nights here. Especially when the stage is empty, or during DJ performances, when the volume goes through the roof.

Much like its London sister, The Box New York attracts many celebrity clients, from Elon Musk to Owen Wilson and Kate Hudson. You can expect to see some of the richest and most famous guests in all of New York at this edgy nightclub.

Naturally, a venue like this doesn't come cheap. The drinks are at the high end, even for New York, and service fees can scale up quite sharply for table service, waitresses, and sometimes the acts themselves get paid in tips as well. So make sure to bring plenty of extra for your performance fees and to tip your waitress.

The dress code is much more flexible than the code at more conventional or mainstream clubs. That said, you are expected to put in some effort. Whether you choose to show up in business casual, or dressed like you could be on the stage at one of their burlesque shows, make sure your look is well put-together, without sportswear or damaged items. Distressed clothes are fine, so long as they look expensive.

And you can't expect to get in on the day, especially not if there is a big name, or a particularly amazing show advertised. Instead, make sure to make a reservation and book a table.
