Jimmy Woo is one of several Amsterdam clubs which has a typical international – mostly Asian style, décor and allure. The club was founded by catering entrepreneur Casper Reinders, who, as a collector of Chinese antiques, came up with the idea to create a club under a pseudonym of a fictional owner. In October 2003, this fictional owner, named Jimmy Woo, was announced with his plans to open a club in Amsterdam. Woo was, according to rumors, a Hong Kong businessman who, besides running an opium trade, was also a kung - fu master. Even a reporter from the De Telegraaf planned an interview with the 'Chinese businessman'.
From a building on the Korte Leidsedwarsstraat, owned by two real estate entrepreneurs, two floors were converted into a nightclub. "I was looking for an English-Chinese name, a bit of Hong Kong feeling, so I came up with the idea to call it Jimmy Woo”, explained Reinders his idea to give the club this typical name.
From its beginning, Jimmy Woo had a great success. Lot of Netherlands and international celebrities visit the club: Rihanna, Stacey Rookhuizen and Ben Saunders are some of them. There is a fence in front of Jimmy Woo where the guests are inspected at the door. Once admitted, the guest has to go upstairs via staircase, to enter the upper floor, with lounge bar. Following another staircase, you can get downstairs, where is located the dance hall. Characteristic of this ballroom is the ceiling, which is completely covered by lamps.
The club, therefore, has two floors, with a striking décor. It represents a mix of different Asian cultures, some South African elements, and even some L.A, Belgian and Italian details, thanks to Italian and Belgian designers. As already mentioned, there is a lounge upstairs, with an Asian style bar: Indonesian wooden tables, Japanese screens, an original Persian rug, antique cabinets and pink rice paper will take you to Asia. An exotic Asian theme is combined with trendy touches of black couches, cozy booths, and an exquisite bar glowing with fluorescent purple lights. Downstairs you will find another bar and a dance floor. The down floor is covered by around 12 000 light bulbs that blink following the rhythm of different music styles. There are 80 copper domed lamps, designed by Italian designer Maretti, then one enormous lamp above the staircase, created by Thijs Murre. The walls are covered by tattoo artist Tygo Veldhoen performance art that runs the books, and by photos of Michael Josephs. It is is an exclusive seating area situated on a brightly-lit platform and secluded by thin, intricate dividers and sheer curtains.
You can enjoy the R&B, HIP HOP, POP and dance rhythms every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The parties, such as PLEASE DO NOT TELL– Every Friday at Jimmy Woo, then, ENTER THE WOO, with nostalgic R&B and HIP HOP hits, or MIDNIGHT SOCIETY, will bring you to a positive madness.
Unfortunately, Jimmy Woo Club has a totally strict door policy, so not everybody can get in. The socialite Morris Nieuwenhuis, who worked in his former career as a doorman at Jimmy Woo, explained that the selection at the door is very strict; therefore, appearance, care and social status are considered upon admission.
It is still no clear what the criteria is, but if you are lucky and well dressed, you will enjoy the exotic décor and fantastic music in this amazing mix of Asian and Western European décor.
